May 2024 - Making Each Day Count
/The journey from Passover to Shavuot is primarily one in which we transform ourselves from a just-freed band of slaves into a covenanted people. We count the days now, in this period of the Omer, as we move from liberation to celebrating the receiving of the Torah.
Counting the days is very familiar to us: children count the days until their birthday, we count the days to our vacation, retirement, a wedding, etc. Psalm 90 says, “Teach us to number our days with a heart of wisdom.” You can hear me singing a setting of this verse with its beautiful message and melody, right HERE.
You may have special days during this time period too, and at BSJC we will have a very special one as well. On Saturday, June 1 at 7:00 pm, we will welcome Dave Rullo to treat us with a book talk. He recently published a book about The Beehive, a 1990’s coffeehouse here in Pittsburgh, started by 2 Jewish guys. I heard Dave’s talk and it was fascinating, even though I have no history here in Pittsburgh! He is engaging, funny, and informative, and this is one event you will thoroughly enjoy. It’s all the buzz!
We not only count the days, but we make each day count. Get together with our wonderful BSJC community and come to the synagogue for a service or an event and make each of your days count.
B’shalom,
Cantor Rena
